Macc & the Art of Long Distance Walking
by Graham Wilson, illustrated by Gerry Dale
New edition out now
Macc & the Art of Long Distance Walking first hit the bookstands in May 1998. Its distinctive mix of walks, wit, literature and pubs was such a success that it was reprinted almost at once and has since become a minor classic. It includes walks in the Peak District [Click here for an extract from the Derwent Watershed], the Welsh Three Thousanders and the Bob Graham Round.
For his new edition of Macc & the Art of Long Distance Walking, Graham Wilson has updated the text and added a completely new chapter [Click here to read more] and Gerry Dale has done two extra illustrations (see example above). Below are some reviews of the first edition:
“This book is a gem … The text is full of unexpected and engaging diversions into mountaineering literature, social history, the right to roam and maps … Dry humour and forthright opinions thread the book; anecdotes, quotes and thoughts range far and wide and make this one of the most refreshing reads I’ve had for a long time.”
Kevin Borman, High
“Once I’d started reading I couldn’t put it down … the author covers such diverse subjects as the problems of access to open countryside, the history of Munros and other tick lists. Other topics include aspects of the history of British mountaineering, rock climbing and its associated literature, legendary long-distance bog trotters … Highly recommended!”
Jerry Rawson, TGO
“Definitely not for the mass market, thank goodness … Much of the writing is done in the bon mot style … [which] brings to mind the light—hearted and well—written air of the classic Jerome K Jerome, Three Men in a Boat … Mr Wilson does cover contemporary issues … but the flavour of the main course throughout is of a different time; older stories from the Rucksack Club and Fell & Rock Climbing Club (1942) journals, the 1864 birth of the Bob Graham Round and even attempts to measure the weight of Schiehallion!”
