The grindstone
Millrace’s occasional diary…
June 2007
In June, a mountaineer’s fancy lightly turns to thoughts of … the Cairngorms. (Apologies, Alfred Lord T.) One hundred and three years ago this month, three young friends did a grand 24–hour circuit, taking in Ben Macdui, Carn a’ Mhaim, Beinn Bhrotain, Monadh Mor, Devil’s Point, Cairn Toul, Sgor an Lochain Uaine and Braeriach. A F Whyte’s A Cairngorm Chronicle, published here for the first time and just back from our Cornish printers, captures the vigour, humour and companionship of that long summer’s day.
Our other Scottish title this year, Ronald Turnbull’s The Life and Times of the Black Pig, is being prepared for press. Colin Brash’s distinctive illustrations are arriving steadily and promise to be a perfect complement to the text.
Finally, our new edition of Macc & the Art of Long Distance Walking, complete with an extra chapter, is off to the printers shortly. Bibliophiles and collectors may be interested to know that 125 copies of this new edition will have illustrated endpapers and be numbered and signed by author and illustrator.
