Spring 2013

A lovely start to the new year. Trail magazine’s Jan 2013 issue contained a puff for two Millrace titles by Ronald Turnbull. The feature ‘It’s Your Fantasy Bookshelf’ put Turnbull’s mountain biography of Ben Macdui, The Life and Times of the Black Pig, in a select company of twenty fine mountain writers, including Robert Macfarlane, Heinrich Harrer and A Harry Griffin. Trail declared that both The Life and Times of the Black Pig and its fellow on Great Gable, The Riddle of Sphinx Rock, are ‘excellent’. The Riddle of Sphinx Rock has almost sold out now, so if you’d like a copy you'll need to hurry…

Mountain enthusiasts may also be interested in a new book by Barbara Swindin. All But One is illustrated with some very fine colour photographs and is an engaging account of Barbara’s on-off love affair with mountaineering and ski-mountaineering. In between charting her own gradual growth in competence and her realisation that she might become the first woman to climb all the Alpine Fourthousanders, she takes a fascinating look at the petticoat pioneers of alpinism. All But One is published by Vertebrate Publishing.

Finally, we were delighted to see the gorgeous new Folio edition of Andrew Lang’s The Olive Fairy Book, stunningly illustrated by Kate Baylay. We are proud to remember that her very first book commissions were the jackets for the Millrace editions of My Friends the Miss Boyds and My Friend Monica. Many congratulations to Kate for this Folio triumph.
